National Championships are won in the off season

I think losing Kevin Scott, EJ Price, Noah Jefferson, Osa Masina, and Matt Booermeester was the difference in us not being a playoff team. All players are from positions in significant need and their presence could have turned the tide. Now we are relying on underclassmen to step up, which a lot of them thankfully have.

Hopefully Helton is in everyone's ear to remain smart this off season.

Ohio State's "Weakness"...

Going into the game I read on this site and others, that Ohio State was susceptible to good Tight Ends.

I also read that Daniel I. could be featured to take advantage...I believe he caught 1 pass.

I continue to be amazed at how little we use our tight ends...Petite was used somewhat, but Daniel is supposed to be the real deal, and I believe he was healthy going into this game.

USC: The Bowl , the season, the Future.

The game: OSU vs. USC. OSU came in with a big reputation and proved to be hard to handle on defense. USC actually had more yards 413 to 277, better 3rd and 4th down conversion of 8-22 vs. 3-14, But two important stats in a tough game went all to OSU: Turnovers gained were for OSU 4-1, and sacks OSU 8-3. On turnovers 3 ended up netting the Buckeyes 21 points (of 24) and 1 ended up netting the Trojans 7 points (all they had). USC moved the ball better including first downs (23-13) but the drives were usually ending in turnovers (4), or sacks followed by punts (2) and 2 fumbles (one at OSU 14) and a turnover on downs (at OSU 11). USC also had a missed chip shot FG. The OSU offense was sort of mundane due to the USC D. JT Barrett averaged 4.1 ypc and Dobbins averaged 3.0 ypc with a 7 yard longest run. The USC offense just couldn't complete the job. For those saying Ohio State was that good and USC was that bad-pretty incomplete analysis IMO- ultimately USC lost to a combination of Ohio State's great defense and USC mistakes. The SEC refs held back on penalties (6 total) but called PI differently at times and spotted the ball poorly on at least 3 critical occasions.

The season: 11-3 (.786). Pac12 Champion. Disappointing, since USC was a top 4 choice, and a bad bowl ending no doubt. But USC is one of only 7 power 5 teams to win 11 or more (Clemson 12-1, Oklahoma 12-1, TCU 11-3, OSU 12-2, Wisconsin 12-1, Georgia 12-1, Alabama 11-1), 4 others have a chance with a game left (Miami 10-2. PSU 10-2, UW 10-2, Auburn 11-1). But the cry will be "what about the PAC12 record in the bowls". First off 40 bowls , 80 teams is way too much, and teams from the PAC12 also should not have been in, IMO they were ASU, UCLA, and Oregon. WSU without QB Falk was also a question. But bowl records are not always revealing. Last year the Big 10 was 3-7, the SEC was 6-7 yet no crying about that. This year the SEC is 0-4 in bowl games, but 2 SEC teams were in the final 4.The USC highs were the 2 Stanford wins, and sweeping the P12 south (particularly Utah and Arizona). The lows were the debacle at Notre Dame (who resembles Ohio State in its game approach) and the close late loss at WSU. With a very young OL, depleted DL, and a young secondary USC did well.

Looking ahead: Now the crystal ball. QB Darnold-does he go? After reinforcing some doubters on his bad decisions (resulting in turnovers) last night was not what he would want. This after Coach Helton pre-game was talking about getting the passes off quickly because of the OSU rush With a good club coming back and about 4 high round QBs in competition this year, he may want to come back. Ronald Jones….likely to go IMO. But USC will be loaded at RB. Receivers lose steady Mitchell but brings back most everyone- and it's a deep unit. Unlike last year, the OL loses Center Falah and Talamaivo, that’s it. On D the losses are Nwosu- USCs best defender, Fatu, and Chris Hawkins. The OOC schedule has Texas away (moderate problem) but ND and UNLV at home. In the PAC12 USC plays Oregon State away and Washington State at home. Overall that schedule part is navigable. In the P12 south, UCLA (away) is rebuilding and has Coach Kelly, which could be interesting if they have a Kelly- type QB (Transfer). UA (Away) has an improving QB in Tate , and Utah (away) are potential challenges. Colorado and Cal are at home. A little tougher schedule than this year. But a possible top 5 recruiting class will help a lot.

I can't stand urban meyer

he kind of has a way of putting sam darnold down. backhanded compliments. he said it at half time and then again after the game. something to effect of "if you put a lot pressure on sam, he won't play that well", urban, that is true of all qb's. even aaron rodgers would have had issues tonight. their d did get to sam a lot, but sam still threw for 356 mr meyer. we just could not run the ball and they did have a very good good pass rush. to me, osu did not stop sam. they stopped the run game which led to a lot of third and longs where they get a good pass rush on usc.

Pick One: Elite S&C Coach or Elite OL Coach

Say you could choose between having Alabama’s S&C coach or the best OL coach in the country... (don’t know who that is maybe OU or Clemson’s coach).

Which one would be more beneficial to the team?

A great S&C coach would have an effect on not just OL run and pass blocking but really the whole team to include defensive players (tackling, block shedding).

Then again, strength and flexibility can be negated on an OL (and DL) by lack of technique/leverage and discipline. A great OL coach and a fundamentally sound OL would do wonders for the kind of skill position talent that SC gets. Aggression is also separate from strength and can be taught.

My personal viewpoint on CFB is that grown men rule the day and many times it’s possible to be dominant without elite talent simply by having stronger players. It’s not a panacea for everything, but most of the time it works, especially when you have talent.

If the talent at USC were ever as big/strong as Stanford and Alabama from a power and functional strength standpoint, they would be elite, even without a talented roster.

My vote is for an elite S&C coach over an elite OL coach if I had to choose. I think this is even more important for USC recruiting in SoCal where the OL/DL recruits aren’t naturally as big and strong out of HS as SEC recruits.

Call me sick....

but I just finished rewatching the game and I have the same opinion that I had last night. IF SC’s Oline was a little better we win by 2 Td’s. The 1st 3 drives pretty much set the tone of the game.

1st drive: on the 3rd play of the game Burnett catches a ball for a 1st down and fumbles to give the ball to OSU at the 19 yard line.

2nd drive: Sc is marching and on 3rd down the ref miss an easy PI that if called gives SC a 1st down inside the 30 yard line.

OSU then loses 6 yards on offense.

3rd drive; SC driving again and Darnold completes a Pass to burnett down to the 26 yard line but is ruled incomplete. I think it was complete because the ball was ripped out after he was on the ground but oh well.

And the 4th drive: pick 6. Boom 17-0

Couldn’t have been a worse start to the game but SC hung in there and if Sam had some time to pass I think we win pretty easily. OSU couldnt move the ball at all.

Ronald Jones Postgame Interview

I was able to walk off the field with RoJo after the game and ask him a few questions about his future, he's never gives the most elaborate interviews so I included my questions for some further clarity.

Q: Was this your final game in Cardinal and Gold?
"I don't know, I'm still trying to figure it out, I need to graduate, things like that."

Q: What's the biggest factor in your decision - draft evaluations, coaches, family, team?
"Probably a little bit of all. I'm just going to need some time to think about it."

Q: Does a loss like this make it tougher to come back?
"Nah, because we have unfinished business, so it's just disappointing right now."

Q: So, is it more motivating?
"Yeah, it is actually."

Q: Do you think if Sam decided to come back, you would seriously consider returning as well?
"Oh yeah, most definitely. That's the man. You know, when you got him under center there's always a possibility of winning every game."

NOTE: Underclassmen have until Jan. 15 to file declaration papers with the NFL.

So proud of these

kids last night. They were overwhelmed because of the position these coaches put them in. Blown assignments all night and not knowing who to block. I know it’s weird to say the word proud but Urbie said our D played well and stifled them. Probably their lowest output all year long with half their yards they normally are used to and just way to many turnovers to overcome.
