The defense got the best of the offense, in Saturday’s scrimmage and throughout the week. Perhaps no position group is having a better spring than the entire secondary.

Here are my choices for the top performers from Week 3:

QB: Matt Fink -- better handle on playbook; improving completion percentage; being decisive
TB: Vavae Malepeai -- great feet, change of direction; great vision; bulldog
WR: Tyler Vaughns -- deceptive, has few tells for DBs; strongest rapport with QBs
TE: Josh Falo -- good hands; dynamic traits
OL: Brett Neilon -- holding his own at center in place of Lobendahn
DL: Brandon Pili -- run-stopper; can play multiple spots (techniques); Udeze calls him an “easy learner”
LB: Porter Gustin -- looks faster; hungry; mentally locked in
CB: Biggie Marshall -- tracking deep balls superbly; fully engaged, focused; vocal
S: Ykili Ross -- knows where to be; strong sense of urgency; more aggressive
Honorable mentions: TB Aca’Cedric Ware (renewed confidence), WR Velus Jones (running with more control), OLB Hunter Echols (hustle), CB Jonathan Lockett (productive), CB Greg Johnson (fundamental), S Marvell Tell (leader)

Newcomer of the week: S Talanoa Hufanga -- active; instinctive; fearless; plays fast
Honorable mention: C Justin Dedich (assignment sound); OLB Kana’i Mauga (slippery)
