USC defensive line coach Kenechi Udeze interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers Thursday morning. He is currently weighing whether he will leave USC to become the 49ers’ assistant defensive line coach/pass rush specialist.

Udeze, one of the top recruiters on staff, would be a notable loss for the Trojans. Known for his tireless work ethic and attention to detail, he was rewarded with an extension last summer following an impressive debut season at his alma mater in 2016. The 34-year-old Udeze helped shape an even better defensive line unit in 2017.

The homecoming might soon come to an end, however. Udeze has not been allowed to coach from the sidelines during games, an uncommon arrangement that has been a point of contention for not only Udeze but his players and recruits. He’s now also garnering interest from other teams and is considered a budding talent in the coaching ranks.

Got to give Cal credit they are short handed this year and had one of their better players sit out due to team violation. USC likewise was without Bennie Boatwright, likely giving his foot one more week before the Bruins game.

USC played good D throughout the game and though they couldn’t spit in the ocean with 32% shooting in the first half (at least 7 in and out bummers) they induced 14 turnovers and overall got 1/3 of their points off Cal turnovers mostly cause by the press D. Unlike the Stanford game the refs kind of let them play in this one with 27total FTs.

After that dismal showing in the last game the attendance was decent at 6,000 or so but the student section should be ashamed with less than 1/3 of the seats occupied. Lynn Swan and Max Nikias were there.

USC won its 6th straight conference game after that Stanford 50 foot dagger. That’s the most since 2002 with 9 straight being the high in 1992. Not likely to be repeated this year with UCLA, and at the Arizonas , though Arizona was lucky against Utah after nearly giving away their game at home.

Streaky game in first half, Cal packed it in inside and USC shot erratically so it went 16-8 Cal, then 23-18 USC ending at 31-29 UC at hr half. In the second half the 3 points shots by 6th man candidate Jonah Matthews and Elijah Stewart finding his touch has a combined game of 32 points and 8-13 3 pointers. It was still within 5 at the 11 minute mark and USC then spurted to a 20 point lead that ended 18 point difference. Funny since USC was favored by 17 1/2 and that didn’t look possible. Now 1/2 game behind Arizona and #41 in RPI and 47 in toughest SOS which should get better (and more challenging) over the remaining parts of the season.

Metu is a great player but his temper needs to be fixed. He was beaten on a scoring play, fouled the shooter and tossed the ball in anger against the cushiony part of the basket…a tech foul and a 10 point lead striped from 10 pints to 5 after the FTs.

A member of the program informed me late Thursday evening that the top existing priority for this signing class, if USC needs to make room, is at cornerback. The Trojans have already signed one (Chase Williams) and are finalists (if not favorites) for three others (Olaijah Griffin, Isaac Taylor-Stuart and Julius Irvin, who could also end up at safety).

I fully expect the Trojans to add at least one player among this trio; the need is obvious. But I'm told they'd ideally sign more than one on Feb. 7. Signing three corners in a single class was a tougher sell in the past. It doesn't figure to be as much of an issue now, what with USC's base defense featuring two corners and a nickel back. The real predicament facing USC is space. There's not a lot of it, and Clay Helton has spurned the practice of running scholarship players off the roster or revoking scholarships from former walk-ons.

As outlined in the scholarship distribution chart, USC is currently at 81 scholarships, a number that does not include its four unsigned commits. Quarterback JT Daniels and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown are locks to sign. The source said the Trojans will have a "full" defensive line class, which would seem to indicate commits Trevor Trout and Tuli Letuligasenoa will join JuCo signee Caleb Tremblay. (FWIW, our math has USC needing just two down linemen from this class.)

It should be noted that the Trojans can surpass 85 scholarships for now; they only need to be at 85 (or below) by late June when the second summer school session begins. There's a strong possibility that Helton is aware of specific players who ultimately intend to transfer, thus freeing up spots for signing day. That number, I was told Thursday, is inexact and keeps changing, likely because USC's transfer candidates remain undecided about leaving. Consider it part of the mystery that inevitably accompanies every signing day.

There are those close to USC's recruiting efforts who are nervous about how the Trojans will close along the defensive line.

USC has obviously done very well so far, signing Caleb Tremblay while securing commitments from Tuli Letuligasenoa and Trevor Trout. But Kenechi Udeze's recent flirtation with the NFL is causing some nervousness at USC because Letuligasenoa and Trout haven't signed anything yet.

It's worth noting that Letuligasenoa told me at the Polynesian Bowl that he was completely committed to USC (although he was looking to visit another PAC-12 school at the time, a visit that never materialized.) Trevor Trout, told me this week that was he was completely committed to USC as well.

Tells me he'll visit USC this weekend.

I've been told by someone I trust that Washington hopes to host USC DT commit Tuli Letuligasenoa on February 2.

I was also told that Washington is making "a big push" to get him to sign with them.

total numbers a team can have period. I got a buddy asking me what the total number of players that can travel to away games and how many players can a team have from a numbers standpoint on any given day. I said 105 but maybe a little more or less?

Just passing on some interesting information

While We were staying at the team hotel for the Cotton Bowl, I talked to our former tailback coach.

When I asked him why Mychale Salahuddin backed off his committing to USC, he told me it was because he wants to be a wide receiver! I said what and he said yes. I said it's not because of his mother and what happened on their recruiting visit? He said absolutely not. We recruited him to be a tail back and he wanted to be a wide receiver. And he said we have moved on...

He also said this was an absolute surprise to him to USC and anyone around him!!

He was dead serious and I even had lunch with him. Great coach and person.

Any update

Not long ago, USC led the way for Rivals100 DB Julius Irvin and it seemed that the product of Servite HS in Anaheim, Calif. was set on picking the Trojans.

That was before the early signing period and a last second push by USC's coaching staff for Irvin to hold off on signing until February. That push put things up in the air again and made those around Irvin question whether or not he was a top priority for the school. But now, USC's coaches are back on Irvin and recruiting him hard.

In fact, Irvin hosted USC last night. A source close to Irvin's recruitment told TrojanSports.com that Ronnie Bradford, Keary Colbert and Clay Helton made it out to see Irvin.

Those three convinced Irvin to visit USC again before making a commitment.

"He's going to SC again on Saturday," the source said.

Irvin's family is apparently very impressed with USC's newest addition to the coaching staff, Keary Colbert. Colbert is helping USC fight off a familiar conference rival and a new addition to Irvin's top three.

"I know it's down to them, Washington and Alabama," the source said.

Alabama got Irvin's fifth and final official visit and our source says "honestly, I think it's big" when asked what the scholarship offer from the Crimson Tide means to Irvin. The Crimson Tide saw Irvin on an in-home visit "the other day" as did Washington's Jimmy Lake.

Our source says he doesn't know which school Irvin will pick but that we should expect Irvin's commitment before signing day and not long after this weekend's visit to USC.
