The Dow industrials notched another all-time high, closing at 37656.52. For those keeping track at home, that's the blue-chip index's sixth record close this month. The Dow logged its last closing high at 37557.92 points on Dec. 19, when it logged five consecutive trading sessions closing at new highs.

Ryan, Question about Anthony Lucas

Ryan,
we were so over the moon last year when we got his commitment, he like Korey Foreman were hardly used. Is he legit and have you heard anything from the coaches about him, his abilities, work ethic, injuries, any status at all. While we are going into the portal to comb thru it, and we have a kid on the roster already that is a grown man who should help us and be a starter, it is perplexing that he is seldom used. Any information about him is welcomed and appreciated.

Recruiting 2024 OL Kalolo Ta'aga announces USC commitment

San Francisco-Archbishop Riordan offensive tackle Kalolo Ta'aga is ready to make his commitment decision after visiting USC this weekend. The 6-foot-7, 265-pound converted basketball player was offered by the Trojans just a couple weeks ago and that quickly turned into an official visit this weekend. He just got back home today after spending the last couple days in Los Angeles, and he's now ready to shut down his recruitment and make a decision.

He says his family will discuss the choice tomorrow and he will inform his future staff of the choice. It will remain silent until a Dec. 17 pre-signing day party. The Trojans certainly put themselves in a good spot with the plan they have laid out for him.

"I was looking into the numbers with my parents, and coach Henson has put a lot of players through the league at my position. There's not a lot of tackles who've never played football before, but he's coached a lot of players to make a lot of money to do that. ... I'm thinking of early enrolling, so if I go to USC he has a whole plan set. Meeting with the strength and conditioning coach was a great meeting. He's legit. He's gonna push the kids in the right way to be successful on and off the field. Coach Bennie Wylie, he's the real deal."

Ta'aga is still a raw player so he'll need time to develop, but coaches have been enamored by his potential. He was previously committed to San Jose State and once he backed off that pledge several schools became more involved. He's taken official visits to Utah, Arizona and Cal in addition to USC. Oregon, Florida and Ole Miss are a few other schools that offered and became involved this fall.

My Notes on SC’s 93-79 win over Stanford

Stanford University was founded in 1885 by California senator Leland Stanford and wife Jane, “to promote the public welfare by exercising an influence in behalf of humanity and civilization.” The former railroad magnate and 8th governor of CA and his wife lost their only child Leland, Jr. to typhoid in 1884 and decided that building a university was a fitting memorial, thus Leland Stanford Junior University was born and admitted students in 1891. Stanford has an 8,180-acre campus (“The Farm’), an endowment of $36.5B, an enrollment of 17,246 students (7858 undergrads).

Their sports nickname was Indians until 1972, when Native American students forced a student senate vote and, after the admin rejected “Robber Barons,” the nickname became the Cardinal (Harvard is the Crimson, so ‘Harvard of the West’ is the Cardinal). Unofficial mascot is the Stanford Tree. Stanford tops the nation with 130 NCAA team & 529 individual championships. Winners of 29 consecutive NACDA Director’s Cups & 296 Olympic medals (150 gold, 79 silver, 67 bronze).

Stanford basketball began in 1913 (1549-1175, .569), 1942 NCAA Champion, 2 Final Fours (last 1998), 17 NCAA tournaments (last 2014), 13 conference titles (last 2004), 1 Pac-12 Tournament title, 45 NBA draft picks (14 1st round), 5 players currently in the NBA (Brook & Robin Lopez, KZ Okpala, Dwight Powell, Ziaire Williams). Retired jersey: No. 7 Hank Luisetti (1935-38), AP All-American First Team: Luisetti, Casey Jacobsen, Donald Burness, Josh Childress, Brevin Knight, Todd Lichti. Current coach Jerod Haase is 119-115 in 8 seasons. He was a star player at Kansas, but played his freshman season at Cal, starting in the backcourt with Jason Kidd. It’s ironic that Stanford’s coach played at rival Cal, while Cal’s coach Mark Madsen played at Stanford.

Pregame

Walking to the arena I wonder whether the Cal game was a fluke or whether our team sustains the momentum against Stanford. Outside Founder’s Room, the usual suspects are checking in and getting meal/dessert tickets and table assignments. Some pass on the check-in and head for the bar.

Rashad Moore, Asst AD for Major Gifts, is the emcee and will introduce our speaker. To get the crowd ready he says “Hey, we are undefeated in 2024!” Well, I guess we are with our lofty 1 game win streak – haha. The guest speaker was Asst AD of Basketball Operations Michael Swets, in his 8th year with Enfield. He earned a BS at Boston College, serving as a basketball student manager under coach Al Skinner for 3 yrs. He got an MBA at Providence, where he served as GA for 2 yrs and comes to SC after 4 yrs at Towson (MD). Until his hire he'd never set foot in CA and didn’t know if he would like it. Now, he wouldn't go back to the east coast. If you’re wondering what an Ops director does: Swets coordinates travel, handles the budget, works non-conference schedules, oversees the team managers, coordinates daily schedule, interfaces with other departments and community outreach organizations.

He says the team is re-energized and having their best practices of the season. They are sharing the ball, hitting the boards and playing good defense. He says if they do that in the games, we will be fine. Asked about Kijani and AP not playing last game, he said that it is very difficult to play 11-12 players every game and that shortened rotations would be determined by practice and production in games. Stanford has shown it can win in a variety of ways – scored 100 in beating AZ and won a rock fight against ucla. We will try to slow them down, control their 3-pt opportunities and limit them to one shot per possession. They have a big they like to keep out on the perimeter – so we need to move him around a little bit.

The starters will be the same as the Cal game: Boogie, Kobe, Isaiah, DJ, Josh. Bronny is still on a minutes restriction and he doesn’t know when the doctors will lift it. Someone asked if Lebron would be at the game. He said he couldn’t be sure, but the Lakers weren’t playing today.

There is a pretty nice crowd (6481 announced), classes resume Monday and the student section is nearly full. The Song Girls are back from the Holiday Bowl, but Crash is not – where’s the dedication man? -haha. DJ Mal-ski engages with the crowd and ensures everyone will be ‘loud and proud.’ There are a handful of NBA scouts here.

Lebron sneaks into the arena during the national anthem sung by an accomplished 15-yr old vocalist. After the game starts, I spy 3-time Beach Volleyball All-American Sara Hughes, actor Jason Bateman and soccer star Trinity Rodman.

The Game

Stanford strikes first with the 3-ball, but Boogie answers with one of his own. Boogie was on fire in this game, hitting 5 3’s in the first half and three 3’s in the second. The defensive intensity from SC was present from the start and would pay dividends.

Kobe got his MOJO back getting 2 threes, 2 steals, and a blocked shot in the first 12 minutes! It's amazing how one made 3-ptr can make such a difference to a player's confidence. In the last game against Cal, Kobe went scoreless in the first half with 2 TOs, but in the second half he made a 3 and you could see the confidence in him rise, which led to 3 more consecutive 3's, with Kobe talking a little smack as he ran back and making the symbol for ice in his veins! Apparently, that game was not a one-off as he came to play in this game looking like the player voted Preseason Pac-12 Defensive POY.

Collier followed the Wooden mantra of ‘be quick, but don’t hurry’ in this game. He was calm and under control and led his team to victory. After a 7 assist, 0 TO game vs Cal, he followed up with 4 assists and 2 TOs against Stanford.

After 3 ties and 3 lead changes, SC led 39-35 at the half. Both teams shot well:

SC: 42.8% FG (15-35), 53.3% 3FG (8-15), 20% FT (1-5)

Stanford: 44.8% FG (13-29), 46.2% 3FG (6-13), 100% FT (3-3)

At halftime, DJ Malski conducted the t-shirt toss with the Trojan Dance Force and was assisted by Trinity Rodman and Malski’s 5 yr old daughter. At the end, Malski walked up to the Pac-12 Network broadcasting table and gave Bill Walton a t-shirt to toss and Walton stood up, stretched, loosened up his arm and flung the t-shirt into the crowd, drawing a small ovation. Not to be outdone, Malski took his last remaining shirt and fired it 5 rows deep into the upper deck – very impressive arm for a deejay – hah.

Coming out of the locker room down four, Stanford brought energy and great shooting (made 7 of 9 threes) to cut the lead down to 1 pt six times (41-40, 43-42, 45-44, 47-46, 63-62, lastly 66-65 at 8:02 left). They tied the game at 61-61 with 9:46 on the clock, but they never led. SC finished the game with their largest margin of 14 points, winning 93-79.

Stanford shot 53% overall and 59% from behind the arc, but SC forced them into 18 TOs (13 steals), converting those TOs into 25 pts. SC had a season-low 6 TOs and 10 fouls against Stanford.

SC had more pts in the paint 34-26, pts off TO 25-10, second chance pts 14-2 and fastbreak pts 20-2! Stanford shot well, but SC’s turned defense into offense regularly this game. Oh, Stanford’s big Raynaud was held to 4 pts!

The Big 3 lived up to their name! Collier led all scorers with a career high 26 pts (9-15 FG, 3-4 3FG, 5-8 FT, 3 reb, 4 assts, 1 steal), Boogie had 22 pts (8-14 FG, 6-8 3FG, 5 reb, 4 assists, 3 steals, 1 blk), Kobe had what Enfield said was his best game of the season: 21 pts (9-18 FG, 2-4 3FG, 1-1 FT), 5 rebs, 5 assts, 5 steals, 2 blks and zero TOs! He was my Player of the Game, although Collier hit some big shots at the end to lock this win down.

For the game:

SC shot
47.8% FG (32-67), 56% 3FG (14-25), 62.5% FT (15-24)

Stanford shot 52.7% FG (29-55), 59.1% 3FG (13-22), 80% FT (8-10)

SC moves to 8-7 (2-2). Enfield gets win number 212 (trailing Sam Barry (260), Forrest Twogood (251), Bob Boyd (216)).

Stanford falls to 7-7 (2-2) and plays at Oregon State next.

Next up for SC is Washington State at Galen on Wednesday night.

Fight on! Beat the Cougs!

OT: Kraft, Belichick, Brady ...

With all the talk of this possibly being Belichick's last season in New England, what percentage would you apportion to each of these guys for the success of the Patriots dynasty? Hearing NFL players speak on this, it appears they overwhelmingly believe Brady deserves the bulk of the credit. I've not heard from HCs on this matter, but I assume they'd side with Belichick, and yet there are those who feel Kraft's ability to set the stage, provide ample resources, and then manage from afar deserves big-time props.

Where do you guys stand on this?

Walking up to the Galen I am wondering who the sacrificial lamb is going to be that Enfield sends out to address the Founders, because there’s no way it’s going to be Enfield after the debacle in Oregon and coming in with a losing record. The answer is 1st year assistant Kurt Karis, who was a walk-on guard at SC, after 2 yrs at Chicago St. He rose from GA to Director of Scouting to assistant coach, after NCAA guidelines allowed 2 more coaches (former player Desmon Farmer is the other).

The always dapper Karis introduces himself and notes how long he has been with Enfield and goes right to “one thing (he) knows is that Andy will figure this out”. He says that they have been looking to find guys who play hard in practice, play defense and ‘play the right way’. They worked on not turning the ball over, sharing the ball and player movement without the ball. Andy is tired of TO’s and lack of ball/player movement. If he sees players standing around in the game, he will pull them out. What Kurt enjoys most about being a coach vs. Dir of Scouting, is that he can get on the court and work guys out and teach them fundamentals and skills. Those were the only comments of substance he provided, it’s obvious he had been coached on what to say, he couldn’t even tell us the starters, saying it was Andy’s decision.

This is the first home game since LBSU on Dec 10th, 5 of the last 6 games have been played away from Galen and SC has lost 5 of their last 6 games. After the game Enfield acknowledged that it was a mistake to schedule so many away and neutral site games this early as SC has played fewer home games than any other Power 5 team. Hopefully, a little home cooking will make the difference tonight.

It was a surprising crowd of 4603 for a midweek game, with the students still out on Holiday (not even Crash was there!) The band, DJ Mal-ski and the Dance Force were there, but the Song Girls must’ve been given this game off after being in San Diego last week for the Holiday Bowl festivities. The NBA scouts passed on this one.

Bronny had the best game of his short SC career vs. OSU (15 pts, 2 3’s, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 reb and 0 TOs) so I was thinking maybe Lebron would be at the game, before remembering the Lakers were hosting the Heat that night. The only celebrity present was Trinity Rodman from the Washington Spirit and U.S. Women’s national soccer team. Maybe her bro will have a good game with her here?

The Game

SC had a starting lineup of Boogie, Kobe, Isaiah, DJ and Josh (first start since Gonzaga game).

Not a good start as SC’s first possession ends in a Rodman TO and Kennedy converted the into the games first points. SC came right back to tie it on a Morgan jumper, off a Collier assist – good ball movement on this play and for the rest of the half, just like the coaches drew it up. All 16 buckets in the half were off assists! In fact, the first unassisted score, a Boogie jumper, came at 4 minutes into the 2nd half. SC continued to move the ball, ending the game with 29 assists (on 33 made baskets), 1 shy of the school record of 30 set in 1975 against OK State. Chalk one up for the coaches.

There were 4 ties in the 1st half, the last at 17-17. Cal’s largest lead was 3 pts, last lead was 24-22 at 6:16. SC’s largest lead was 37-27 on a Boogie fastbreak dunk at 0:48. SC went to the locker room up 37-29.

SC shot 48.5% FG (16-33), 26.7% 3FG (4-15) and 100% FT (1-1).

Cal shot 40% FG (12-30), 23.1% 3FG (3-13) and 50% FT (2-4).

Both teams had 16 rebounds and SC, besides sharing the ball well, played good defense, limiting made 3-ptrs and converting defensive stops into points at the other end. That’s the way Enfield teams play, turning good defense into offense. I hope this becomes a trend with this team. Isaiah Collier led SC with 9 pts and Jalon Tyson had 10 pts for the Bears.

Could SC repeat this performance in the 2nd half? The Trojans led the rest of the game, going up by as many as 17 pts (61-44) at 12:27. Then the tide changed when SC did not respond with the same defensive effort and Cal behind 5 3-ptrs cut the lead down to 4 pts 78-74 with 0:30 seconds on the clock. Despite Boogie missing the front end of 1 and 1’s twice in the last 42 seconds, Harrison and Bronny each converted a pair of FTs and SC held on for the much needed 82-74 win, its eleventh straight win over Cal.

In the 2nd half Cal shot 51.6% FG (26-31), 50% 3FG (9-18) and 66.7% FT (6-9). SC shot 58.6% FG (17-29), 53.9% 3FG (7-13) and 66.7% FT (4-6). After the game Andy said he was not pleased by the second half defense, particularly on 3-pt shooters. Rebounds were again even at 15 apiece.

For the game SC had more points in the paint (36-30), pts off TO (16-14), second chance pts (10-4), fastbreak pts (16-12) and bench pts (23-15).

Cal had 4 players in double digits led by Tyson’s game high 23. SC’s Big Three were led by Boogie’s 15 pts, Kobe’s 14 (all in the 2nd half, including 4 3-ptrs in a row) and Collier’s 13. Rodman had 10 pts including 3 3-ptrs, Bronny had 10 pts, 2 rebs, 3 assists, a steal and No TOs in 18 minutes! He had been averaging 15 minutes per game, but played 20 minutes against OSU and 18 tonight. Harrison had 8 pts including 2 3’s.

Other notables: Collier had a season high 7 assists and a season low 0 TOs! Boogie matched his career highs of 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Kobe got out of his funk and matched his career high with four 3-ptrs and added 7 rebs and 5 assists. Rodman and Hornery contributed the threes we expect from them. They need defenses to respect their outside shooting to open the middle up for our guards.

Good news / bad news with Josh – he started and had 6 pts on 3-4 FG, 2 assists, a block and a steal - that’s Ok, but how can he play 24 minutes and not grab any rebounds at all? Zero, zilch, nada. We can’t have this on a weak rebounding team, Andy needs to give more minutes to Vince and Arrington, who both have greater upside.

SC improves to 7-7 (1-2) and Cal falls to 4-10 (0-3).

During the ESPN broadcast of the Arizona vs. Colorado game, Bill “The Conference of Champions” Walton said: “As long as USC can keep scheduling Cal, they'll be fine." Ouch! Let’s hope that isn’t true, I guess we will find out in our next game Saturday against the other Bay area school.

The Stanford Cardinal (7-6, 2-1) are coming off two big wins (100-82 vs. No. 4 Arizona at home and 59-53 at ucla). The game tips off Saturday at 1 pm from Galen Center and will be carried by Pac-12 Networks.

CONVICTION NOT REQUIRED TO BE DISQUALIFIED UNDER A14, SEC 3

So, clearly ... as the POTUS is an "officer" of the US he is very much subject to this amendment. Sorry .....

"At least eight public officials have been formally adjudicated to be disqualified and barred from public office under Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment since its ratification in 1868". Convictions were not sought nor were they required to bar the offending individuals.
