Question for Chris (and the board) regarding USC coaching resources

Shortly after the Cotton Bowl debacle you made a post where you mentioned how USC spends a lot less money on strength and conditioning and recruiting than schools like Ohio State. I was wondering, what are your sources on that? Are these "fact" public knowledge?

I'm not in any way questioning the accuracy of what you wrote. I'm just trying to understand whether this is something that is publicly known or can otherwise be proven, is one of those "whisper facts" that everybody knows, but no one can definitively say how they know. Are there "on the record" articles, whether on this site or another media source, that discuss this? If someone could post links to such articles, that would be greatly appreciated.

To me, this should be somewhat of a mini-scandal if true. Given all the gouging that USC has placed upon USC football fans, this should be somewhat of a scandal. To shortchange critical aspects of the USC football program while asking us fans to pay higher ticket prices and thousands in "Colluseum renovation" donations is outrageous.

Bama linebacker

Who hit player at didnt get thrown out proceedes to go ballistic on sideline and try to attack a coach but ends up still playing. If our player did that we for sure kick him off the team. Cant figure out why refs didnt toss him or why there was no flag on the other Alabama linebacker that tackled Fromm them pushed his head down. Ref was standing right there.

Tonight's the night we get to crown….

The winner of the last College game of the 2017 season as….winner of the SEC….these guys didn’t resolve it in the regular season. In fact the two teams Georgia and Alabama met only once in SEC playoffs in the last 10 plus years and that was 2012. And in fact they met only once in the regular season, and that was in 2015 in the same time frame. That’s 1 in the last 9, and 5 more years to go until the next meeting in the regular season. Wow, no wonder the selection committee was so hyped up to have this game.

The 4 team playoffs always shafts someone….last year it was PSU and others. This year it was Ohio State and UCF. Yes, the University of Southern Florida that was this year's ONLY undefeated major team. UCF beat Auburn, who handily beat both of the teams (Georgia won the replay) that play for the mythical title tonight. Football is the only major NCAA sport that does not have a real playoff system. Its a shame.

I hope everyone that feels as I do skips the game tonight. Send a message.

The Definitive Analysis of SC QBs

This analysis was done to once and for all to put to bed the idea that Matt Barkley was the best or even a top 3 SC QB. Yes, he might be the best person or trojan, no argument there, he's a great guy, but if we're talking about where he ranks as a QB, the stats just don't support the idea that he's one of our recent best.

First let me explain the analysis. Matt Barkley played all 4 years, other recent SC QBs played a range of years that varied from 1 to 4. Since the only way to truly compare the QB's performances based on their all time numbers is to adjust their statistics to reflect the same amount of games played. Matt Barkley played 47 Games. The Stats below reflect what each QB's career statistics would be based on 47 games played AND their career averages per game. One final note, these statistics are based solely on their years as starters.

Yards TDs Ints Pass/Atmps
Carson Palmer 10,648 65 43 1,425
Matt Leinert 12,866 119 28 1,500
JD Booty 11,664 106 39 1,586
Mark Sanchez 11,595 123 36 1,323
Matt Barkley 12,327 116 48 1,562
Cody Kessler 11,842 101 22 1,443
Sam Darnold 12,584 99 38 1,473

Once the data is analysed, it becomes apparent that Barkley benefitted from 3 things. The first was that he played all 4 years. The 2nd is that he started more games than the other QBs, and 3rd, he attempted more passes than any other QB. Barkley benefitted from an opportunity that the other QBs did not enjoy. Also important to note is the pass attempts of Mark Sanchez. He did not attempt many passes compared to the other SC QBs having attempted only 1,323 passes. Given his low Attempts, once that is equalized Sanchez starts to jump off the page! Based on just a "what it" they all played 47 games, Matt Leinert is definitely the king of SC QBs! Also, while Barkley places a respectable 3rd in total yards, it comes at a great cost as he threw far more ints at 48 than any other QB.

The next set of statistics below are the most accurate, they are definitive because even though the first set was equalized for number of games played, some QBs threw the ball far more often than others. The statistics below reflect adjusting the statistics to 47 games, AND also adjusting so that each QB would have attempted the same amount of passes.

Yards TDs Ints
Carson Palmer 11,672 71 47
Matt Leinert 13,416 122 29
JD Booty 11,490 104 38
Mark Sanchez 13,687 175 43
Matt Barkley 12,327 116 48
Cody Kessler 12,816 110 41
Sam Darnold 13,347 106 41

Once all the proper adjustments are made and we are truly comparing apples to apples it is very clear who were SCs most productive QBs. The first statistic that just jumps off the page is that Sanchez would have throw for 13,687 yards which is over 1,200 yards more than Barkley. Also Mark Sanchez would have thrown for 175 TDs which is 59 more than Barkley and would have thrown 5 less ints. Behind Sanchez is Leinert with 13,416 yards and 122 TDs with only 29 ints! Lastly, once everything is equalized only Carson Palmer and JD Booty would throw for less yards than Barkley although Booty threw for 10 less ints. All other QBs in the sample once properly adjusted become comparable to Barkley with many out producing him in many categories. For example, Cody Kessler put up very similar statistics as Barkley. Kessler would throw for more yards and 7 less ints while only throw 1.25 TDs less per season. The same argument can be made for Sam Darnold, once his stats are adjusted to reflect as many games and attempted passes his numbers are superior in 2 of the 3 categories.

I think 2 conclusions are obvious based on the actual data:

1) Everyone owes Mark Sanchez a dirty apology because he was dealing!
2) We can put to rest that Barkley was the best of all time or even close to it (we did not look at Marinovich, Peet, or Johnson) once you
consider how few yards, TDs and how many INTs those yards and TDs cost. Barkley clearly was only better than Carson Palmer. Booty can make the claim that he put up slightly inferior stats but with far fewer ints.

Like I've always said on the boards, Barkley was a good SC QB BUT not a great one. Great guy, just not a great QB.

I have ALL the data on an Excel spreadsheet if anyone wants me to email it to them.

Does it really matter

if the top 30 players on any service commit to SC? Does anybody believe these kids will progress with this incompetent staff led by CH? How in the hell can anybody believe that these kids are being taught the right things from top to bottom on this staff? After watching greatness, we’re no longer in the same stratosphere as the SEC. I will once again be watching signing day like our super bowl only to be disappointed in the development of these kids. We lack toughness all across the board. #thisshitsucks!!!! Starts at the top and I’m starting to question why this staff is still here? Don’t let us down Lynn......

SC Scholarship Distribution Chart

Seems like CH is making the right changes for his vision of the program. Make all of the jokes you want but out of the 100’s of offers out to WR, SC only has 1 committed, albeit the best one. 2 classes ago SC took 6, these were the chosen ones from the previous HC and you can understand why CH didn’t want to change philosophy’s at the tail end of the recruiting cycle. I believe CH, Tee, and Nansen were the only coaches left from the Sark regime and they were instructed on whom to recruit. I’m sure he will accept 1/2 more players this class but, in the grand scheme of things that is 4/5 in last 2 classes. Where he has made the changes is in the trenches. Last year was his first class that he was responsible for recruiting and only him. He recruited 5 OL and 4DL, when Sark brought in 3 OL(Price transferred)/2DL . You can argue that 3 DL were needed but he was making up for a lack of bodies. As of now SC has 2 OL, I’m sure their are at least one more coming in maybe 2, with 3 DL coming in. With the small class that SC is bringing in, non sanctioned finally, this is right on par. Only true Sophomores and younger are CH’s recruited players. CH has always said he wants to be a run oriented team. With Sam gone I believe that will start to become the reality. We all expect an undefeated season but, CH has back to back 10 win seasons and improved +1 win from the first season. The bar has been set CH let’s see you improve next season.

OT: Any hunters on this board?

Need recommendation for guided upland game (quail primarily) and pig hunting in California for my son and son-in-law. Reasonable price, good experience.

I personally have access to private land in Arroyo Seco near Greenfield so I have no experience with public lands or guided hunts in California. Unfortunately, the invite list is very limited so it's almost impossible to get my son and son-in-law access. The hunter group I am in pretty much only hunt this private ranch so don't have any good recommendations.

As with all hunters, looking for a positive experience, not over-crowded.

Would love Public Land recommendations if you have any. But also open to guided.

We have done google searches but hard to know what is best without recommendations.

Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
