Quick Hits/Footnotes - Tuesday (12/12)

News and notes from today's practice...

USC held its first bowl practice that was open to the media Tuesday, and it was in full pads. (It had a closed practice Monday and will have closed practices Thursday and Friday as well. Wednesday's practice is open to the media.)

OLB Porter Gustin (toe) did not practice, but he was present. I guess that's something, considering he hadn't been in attendance for the past several weeks. Coach Clay Helton said Gustin has yet to partake in any football activity as he continues to rehab and labeled him "day-to-day, week-to-week."

The Cotton Bowl is not for another 17 days, so there's time. If Gustin doesn't take the practice field by next Tuesday, which is USC's last in Los Angeles, I would consider him out. (BTW, USC is taking Dec. 20-22 off to allow players to go home and have a Christmas break with their families before leaving for Dallas on Dec. 23.)

OG Andrew Vorhees did not practice as he remains in concussion protocol.

CB Jack Jones did not practice because of an ankle injury.

WR Tyler Vaughns suffered an AC sprain in his shoulder during practice. TB Ronald Jones (ankle) was held out of the final period. WR Velus Jones (ankle) was also pulled.

Bryan Ellis, an offensive quality control assistant, will serve as USC's quarterbacks coach for the bowl game. (Tyson Helton, as you probably expected, has already left for Tennessee.)

I asked Tee Martin if he was going to be the QBs coach next year. His response was interesting, to say the least:

"I coach the quarterbacks. Even the last two years, on the field, I coach the quarterbacks. I just don't meet with them in meetings. I get my opportunities to talk to Sam and talk to the guys on the field. I stand right behind the quarterbacks. You guys that are out here for the last couple years, I stand right behind the quarterbacks on every play in practice, so that's my opportunity to talk to the quarterbacks. ... I have my opportunity to talk to the quarterbacks and talk about the things that we need to talk about. But I'm a firm believer, when I played quarterback, I didn't want a lot of people in my head, I didn't want a lot of voices, so I give the quarterback coaches their respect and their space to be a consistent voice for the quarterbacks. But if there's something that needs to be talked about, I'll step in and talk about it. But I trust the guys that have been coaching the quarterbacks. ...

"I've coached quarterbacks in my career and got bored doing it, because I'd been doing it since I was 6 years old. From private training to working with Elite 11, and having private quarterbacks throughout my career, early in my career, I did it, and quite honestly, when I got a taste of coaching wideouts, it was so much fun. For me, the biggest challenge is to be able to coach wideouts and call plays. If it was a situation where I didn't talk to the quarterbacks at all, it would be an issue. I get what I need, in terms of my communication with the quarterback, whether it's on game day, whether it's during the week, whether it's at practice, we have a great line of communication, myself and Sam. ...

"I feel like it's best for me to be in the receivers room. The way our system is set up, that is a very vital position, not only in the passing game but in the run game, for what we do. And so I feel my influence should come from the wide receivers room, because it gives me an opportunity to walk around and see everyone, as oppose to sometimes when you're with the quarterbacks and only the quarterbacks, you're kind of stuck with just being with the quarterbacks. It's best that I have the ability to walk around and kind of have my eyes on every position."

Some of this actually contradicts what Martin said in late October, a few days after USC played Notre Dame, when he noted a "communication gap" between him and Darnold. I asked Helton if Martin is under consideration for QBs coach but Helton didn't wish to comment.

I also asked Helton if he advises the QB position any differently than others when it comes to deciding on the NFL draft. In the past, he's said when it's clear that a player could be drafted in the first round, he'd advise him to go. (Here's what he said when Cravens declared, and here's what Cravens said about his meeting with Helton.) Helton sang a bit of a different tune this time around.

"I think every situation is different, each and every one. ... There's times when you have to do it for personal reasons, maybe to help your family. Maybe you're ready, maybe you feel it's your time to move on. What I try to do is say where I think they are right now, what they can accomplish at USC, if they stay. And also, what's the reality? Where are you in the NFL? Is it time to move on and be ready to perform at that level?

"And then let them make their choice. At the end of the day, whether they stay or go, I'm going to hug their neck. And if they go, I'm going to be so thankful for the time that I had with them and what they were able to accomplish while they were here."

The deadline to declare is Jan. 15. Helton said he is awaiting draft evaluations from the NFL while having ongoing conversations with NFL personnel, scouts and general managers. Helton noted there are as many as 10 kids (he wouldn't name names) that could leave early. My best guess on who would be considering it:

Darnold, RoJo, Burnett, Lobendahn, Edoga, Green, Gustin, Cam, Biggie and Tell.

Helton noted the staff lost some days of recruiting because it committed the final week of November to preparing for the Pac-12 title game. The coaches have been trying to play catch-up for the past 10 days, especially given the early signing period (Dec. 20-22).

We have video interviews posted with Tee Martin, Sam Darnold and Ronald Jones II.

Recruiting: Best referrals are our Players & other Recruits

As in sales, the best leads are not cold calling or knocking on doors, they are warm/hot leads that come from existing clients. So we need to get our young studs like J.T. Daniels and P. Gaoteote, Tuli, Dedich and others to really help us get to other guys that we need to close. Coaches and schools can do so much, sometimes it is the relationships of peers that make the final difference.

Is it possible for Daniels to enroll this early? We examine.

As we all know, there’s a rumor swirling that J.T. Daniels will graduate from Mater Dei HS a year and a half early and sign with USC as a member of the 2018 class.

J.T. Daniels’ father, Steve, denies that these rumors are true. J.T. denies these rumors are true. Mater Dei coaches, Mater Dei players and parents of Mater Dei players have all denied these rumors as well.

But the rumor just won’t go away. So I did some digging around the Mater Dei HS course catalog to see if graduating after two and a half years is mathematically possible at this high school.

But before I get into the math, here are a few thing worth remembering:

Mater Dei HS requires 2018 graduates to have completed 260 credits of school work and 2019 graduates to have completed 270 credits.

There are two semesters in a school year with a maximum of eight possible courses scheduled in a semester. It is impossible to take more than eight courses in a semester at Mater Dei as the bell schedule doesn’t allow it. Remember, those are maximums. For example, the maximum number of classes for freshmen is lower. Freshmen are required to take seven courses. Sophomores and juniors can take seven or eight courses. Seniors can take six to eight courses.

Courses offer 5 credits for passing students per semester.

There’s also summer school possibilities. Summer school courses are two semesters of material offering a maximum of 10 credits per summer (outside of trigonometry which is a one semester summer school course.)

With that being said, here’s my math:

Incoming Freshman summer school: 0-10 credits

Freshman semester one: 35 credits

Freshman semester two: 35 credits

Rising Sophomore summer school: 0-10 credits

Sophomore semester one: 35-40 credits

Sophomore semester two: 35-40 credits

Rising Junior summer school: 0-10 credits

Junior year semester one: 35-40 credits

When JT Daniels is rumored to sign and enroll with USC

Minimum total credits: 175

Maximum total credits: 220

Mater Dei requires 260 credits to graduate in 2018 (also four years of english and religious studies, not to mention an extra year of community service and a reflection essay on such service.)

Junior year semester two: 35-40 credits (260 maximum is possible here but the end of his second semester is after the 2018 class signing period, which ends April 1. The english, religious studies and community hurdle is worth noting again.)

Rising Senior summer school: 10 credits

Senior year semester one: 30-40 credits

When JT Daniels has said he wants to enroll at USC

Minimum total credits: 240

Maximum total credits: 310

Mater Dei requires 270 credits to graduate in 2019

Senior year semester two: 30-40 credits

Standard Graduation

Minimum total credits: 270

Maximum total credits: 350

Mater Dei requires 270 credits to graduate in 2019

It appears it would be impossible for Daniels to enroll at USC in time to be on the roster for the 2018 season. But maybe, just maybe, there is a way to cram eight extra classes into your first two and a half years of high school while fulfilling four years of english, religious studies and community service requirements.

So I also spoke to an academic guidance counselor at Mater Dei HS about what it would take to graduate in two and a half years.

When I ask if it was possible, she responded with “not particularly.”

When asked if she had ever heard of a Mater Dei student graduating in two and a half years, she said she had not.

"No, we have students that have graduated a semester early but not necessarily in two and a half years," the counselor said.

When asked if she had seen someone graduate after only three years, she responded with "I've never seen that either.”

Add an academic counselor at Mater Dei to the list of skeptics we listed above. But maybe it is a conspiracy, the rumors are true and Daniels will be a member of the 2018 class. I’ll let you all decide for yourselves.

OT: Gratitude to our Firefighters!!!!

Got a call last Tuesday am we had 15 minutes to evacuate.

Grabbed the pets, wife, and house staff and left....

Fire came up the hill, took out a neighbors house. Firefighters stayed 14 hours up and down my block and saved all the other homes.

Allowed back in but still too smokey to stay.

Huge thank you to our firefighters.

When I can come back, planning to do some serious thank you's to the nearby stations.

For those of you who know the fear, anxiety, and sleepless nights, I send my love. IT's a huge mess.

Fight on!

OT: RIP Bruce Brown - The Endless Summer and On Any Sunday

Not that I had the good fortune of knowing Bruce personally. But by applying his signature touch in sharing his passion for surfing and motorcycling through his two most iconic films, The Endless Summer (1966) and On Any Sunday (1971), he adopted millions of fans into his world and made us at least feel like we had just met our new best friend. The fact that he narrated his own films gave everyone a personal connection to Bruce as well as the story playing out on screen. That, and so much more, is the magic Bruce Brown brought to so many lives.

Bruce Brown left the world at age 80. He passed away in his sleep at his home in Santa Barbara, California.
